Waiting for Rain, revised

Steve Savile went through Waiting For Rain and really helped me see the pacing problems and the places where my main character wasn’t active enough. Not to mention some clarity issues. He read it and just shouted (not really) questions at me as they occurred to him. I would fix the passage in question and […]

Housecleaning

I can tell that Rob felt better because he started cleaning the house. Mind you, this is my mother’s house which looks as if it is ready for a Better Homes and Gardens camera crew to come through the door at any moment. So Rob had to work hard to find something that needed cleaning.

Yuletide woes

I had to go to the mall today. Surely, that explains all of the horror without further detail, so I may go onto the pleasant things. Steve and his family arrived during the night and somehow managed to get a teenager, a proto-teenager and a three year-old into the house without waking anyone. Now that,

Saint John’s Abbey

After the ice-fishing, Rob and I went to Saint John’s Abbey, a Benedictine monastery which has really interesting architecture. It was built in during the period when everyone was doing very modern, minimilist structures, which by and large look like concrete blocks. This doesn’t. It is clean and massive. Rob’s mom says that he likes

Rob’s 2nd day off

We came back from the winery last night and slept in this morning. It was truly lovely. About the only thing that is frustrating me is that I can’t roll onto my left side, because of my shoulder. I know this verges on too-much-information, but–[Censored by thoughts of my mother]

Cellar Club Harvest Party

Bethel Heights has a cellar club and invite them to a harvest party every year. This year they tried something different, and actually had a meal instead of just taking them through the winery. It seemed as if the event went off very well. I helped out some, but had to keep my left hand

At Bethel Heights

Rob came home last night to drop off some Frameworks wine, so I took advantage of the opportunity to ride down to Bethel Heights with him. I’m working on Waiting for Rain. while he is busily crushing grapes. It’s great because my main character in Waiting for Rain is a winemaker. Even though I’ve been

It’s not just me!

Rob just fell into a vat of Pinot Noir and was purple from the waist down. Oh, he’s hopping mad because he’s been doing this for ten years and never fallen in before. Other folks have so it’s not that uncommon and I guess it’s his turn this harvest. It’s nice of him to try

An impromptu slide

I worked on the Portland Spirit today, and needed to get a rag out of the engine room. For reasons that are unclear, the rags are kept on a shelf over the stairs, or ladder in proper nautical terms. I say “stairs” but ladder is probably closer. They are so steep that it is difficult
