Okay, no, but really — I actually WAS offline for the past month

So… yesterday’s Alternate Reality Day prank included only four true things.

  1. I did beat Patrick Rothfuss at being Patrick Rothfuss, although I did not take his account over later.
  2. I wrote a short story trying to match the style of Scalzi, for kicks, which I presented as the first chapter of Young Man’s War: First Contact.
  3. I recorded Writing Excuses last week.
  4. I really was offline for the last month.

Sometimes, I just need to step away from the internet to get some work done, or just to clear my head. This time was a little odd because, for family related reasons, I had to spend a couple of days in the middle of the month online. It was… disorienting and made it hard to break the internet habit again. One of the things that I find when I do this is that I spend the first week feeling lost and not remembering how to get in touch with people by non-internet methods. Paper letters are great, but not for timely matters. These days, if you call someone without an appointment, they seem likely think it’s an emergency.

Anyway– The point being that I’m wondering what I missed. No… Wait. That’s not quite right. What I’m wondering is what’s the thing that happened in March that you think I’ll be sorry not to know about?

  1. Nothing . . . absolutely nothing happened online that anyone needs to know about.

Real life? . . . that’s another matter; Spring came, but it’s still fighting Winter to get it to leave.

Question: did you write yesterday’s post? I ask because it read a bit like Scalzi (where you still channeling him?)

  2. The weather had a major identity crisis, and it couldn’t decide if it was winter or spring. The result was pulling both summer clothes out of storage without putting winter clothes in. I.e. trying to maintain two wardrobes meant an eclectic mix of layers, mugs and tank tops. Where’s a ladies maid when you need one?

  3. Also, Grace Draven is net-blogging a draft of Radiance… It’s a good and unusual story, new ch. 1x/wk.

I don’t know how you feel about publicizing other people’s writing on your own blog, so no link & separate post if you need to delete this. However if you’re interested, Google tells secrets. 😉

  4. Oh, phew, I didn’t think the story read entirely Scalzi (because it described people and things). And then I thought I’d been fooled, and felt bad for putting Scalzi in a box.

  5. I rescued three cats from a neighbor keeping them locked in a cat carrier in the snow without food or warmth. Three sisters – Padme, Mara Jade, and Leia. I also acquired a gorgeous boy with no name from a family member who needed a new home for him. No name boy is now Jameson and a friend from Boston flew in to adopt him. Mara Jade and Padme are now rehomed. Three cats in three weeks! Now just looking for a home for Leia if you know any cat-loving people who want an awesome friend. Willing to travel 5h from home. That’s pretty much been my March.
