I’m driving to Chicago for the weekend. I know, its a lot of driving for the weekend, but due the cave of stuff and reasons, it’s the only opportunity to see my husband for another month. Losing a day to driving suddenly seems worth it, eh? While I’m on the road, have a video of

T. L. Costa is joining us today with her debut novel Playing Tyler. Here’s the Publisher’s description: When is a game not a game? Tyler MacCandless can’t focus, even when he takes his medication. He can’t focus on school, on his future, on a book, on much of anything other than taking care of his older

I know you value your freedom of speech. Good on you. However there are 1788 other members of SFWA who also value their freedom of speech and manage to exercise it without being raging assholes. You are professional writers, so should know the power of words. I therefore must assume that you are deliberately being

Look! A new Thieftaker book. I am so enjoying D.B. Jackson’s historic fantasy series. It’s set in pre-Revolutionary War Boston and isn’t just historic fantasy, but is a full on mystery novel. Such fun. I am also intensely jealous of his covers, which perfectly capture the tone of the novels. Look how gorgeous this is. So what’s

SF writer Janet Freeman-Daily has been fighting lung cancer since 2011. She’s written a blog post about a biopsy that her doctor requested that she can’t get, because the insurance company denied the claim. When I returned home from my recent road trip, a letter from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois (my health insurance

Oh, you might think it’s because it’s in Chicago and it would have been easy to attend. Or all of the friends that I’m missing. No. It’s because I was finally going to get to watch the Bookcart Drill Team Competition in person.

Okay… here’s the thing. That thing I said in the previous post about not really having to deal with sexual harassment at conventions? That’s true. But– but I still deal with the societal baggage that goes with it. For instance — I know who Elise was reporting and I know that because I fielded another

At this year’s Writing Excuses Retreat, we had several evenings where we just answered questions about how to have a career as an SF writer. One night, I said, “We should probably talk about how to handle sexual harassment at a convention.” The room had been quiet before. It became still. I’m fortunate, because I

I’m about to finish recording Seanan McGuire’s Chimes at Midnight, which is a series I very, very much enjoy. Narrating goes so much faster and easier when you like the book your recording. One of the nicest things about recording Seanan’s books is that I know her, so I can call up and double-check pronunciations.

I’ve been largely offline for the past month due to… reasons. These have ranged from OMG deadlines, to recording audio books, to the Writing Excuses Retreat, to helping out with health care for a family member who had surgery. That last I’ll be returning to help with the recovery process for the next couple of

I’ve been on the road since May 25th and won’t be home until sometime in July. Rob just came out to Grand Haven to spend the weekend with me. Missed him. So much. Letters, emails, and phone calls are great, but have nothing on being in person.
