Right. I’ve spent the last two days trying to find an appropriate image for Shimmer‘s Autumn 2006 cover. After looking at hundreds of pieces of art, I would like to know why it is so difficult to find a winged woman who is not a) nude b) carrying a sword c) nude AND carrying a sword d) offering someone salvation–with a sword e) badly rendered or f) all of the above. Oh, wait. I forgot the bondage angels. What’s up with that?
So, I think we’ll be commissioning the cover this time.
David’s theory- Historically, winged females are angels, demurely dressed and ,well, angelic. If your girl is more adventurous, better get her disrobed, lest there be a mix up…
Maybe David’s theory is right and you are looking in the wrong places.
You forgot the Greek Winged Victories. In which case the sword is de rigueur, because a victory without a war is rather pointless 🙂
What I meant was that you should look at old religious paintings. Maybe some of the angels don’t carry swords.
I’ve been trying historic artists as well as new ones.
-d- Is probably right. How about those famous GUARDIAN ANGELS?
They’ve either got swords or they are children and hence disqualified from my search. Believe me, I tried. Oh how I have tried.
Guardian Angels don’t have swords.Raphel and Gabriel don’t have swords. Ask Rob if he remembers the very tall angel which was seen in the rather weird TV series set in a logging town in Washington State. Now that was an impressive figure!
