For a while now, our status has been somewhat up in the air. Were we going back to Iceland or staying in the US? If the US, where?
We know the answer now. We are moving to New York. Manhattan, in fact. This is a move that Rob and I have been talking about for years now, because, though we both love Portland, career-wise we need to be in NY or LA. That choice was the easy part; Rob went to NYU and we had no interest in LA. No offense folks, but we like winter and don’t like owning a car.
Anyway, we finally settled enough of the particulars last night to feel comfortable starting to let people know. We’ll be living on the Upper Westside and moving around the end of April. There’s a chance that I may come out sooner, because of some freelance work, but I’ll keep you posted as things progress.
Those of you who live in Portland, we’ll be doing some downsizing, so if anyone is looking for furniture… Books too and Powell’s won’t take all of them.
Wow! Congratulations on the change! I can certainly understand why New York is better for your careers, but I’m sorry you won’t have the pleasure of living in Portland. Perhaps you will find things to like about NY, too.
We love Portland too, which is why it’s taken us so long to decide to move.
That’s exciting.
Hmm… Winter doesn’t seem to be happening here in New York at the moment either, which suits me (I’m no fan of winter), though it is more than a touch disturbing.
Completely understand about the car thing though 🙂
Good luck with the move!
A new move is exciting! But yeah, winter isn’t happening over here in New Jersey/New York. Bring some cold with you, I say.
What?! No winter? That’s it, the deal’s off.
Oh so excited to have you as a neighbour again! Yippee!
Ah, the dinner parties…
No Car? What about the MGTD?
That’s for when we’re in Chattanooga.
Dammit, I might have made it to Portland in the near future… not going to happen with NY.
*sigh*
Let me know if you end up driving cross country through SLC…
I will. And we might. How the move happens is still a subject of some discussion.
Iron Chef Deux! And I’m full of suggestions regarding cross-country moving, having just done so. Such as, don’t drive 16 foot truck through mountain passes in late November.
Ah! I’ll remember that. Fortunately, the move happens in April.
Wow. Good luck with the move, and with the career opportunities you’re moving for. Too bad we left NYC a few months ago. But hey, if you ever move to NC, we’d love to have you drop by!
(By the way, I completely do not understand moving somewhere even partly out of a desire to experience winter. I’m afraid my suspension of disbelief was strained by that section, possibly even sprained. I would suggest developing a more believable motive for your characters.)
I know! I was thinking about you being in NC now. You know that’s where I’m from originally, right?
(I’ll try to work that into the text so that it’s more believable. Sadly, it’s a plot-point, so I have to find a way to make the reader buy it.)
Now that you mention it, I remember you saying that. Somewhere out west of here, though, right? (Of course, that’s most of country, to be fair.)
(If that’s a plot point, I’m not sure the plot is really believable. I mean, I don’t think people act like that in real life. Perhaps if you set it up as some form of minor dementia it could keep the character both believable and sympathetic.)
Raleigh. So, smack dab in the middle of the state, but I went to college in Greenville.
(What if I changed it to liking snow and wool sweaters? That would keep my needed plot point, but might tone down the winter aspect enough.)
How exciting for you! You already have an amazing blog, but it should be even more interesting to watch your adventures now. I would still like to see you sometime before you go, although I know you’re quite busy. Perhaps if you could use some help organizing or packing or whatnot, I could help.
Just out of curiosity, what kind of plans do you have for your house? Is it the same one we visited?
We’ll have a big shin-dig before we go, don’t worry. Let me get through the next week and I’ll have enough brain for social time.
We’re doing a houseswap with a family in NYC, so they’ll come here for two years and we’ll take their apartment. It may go longer than that, but two years is the minimum. Neat, huh? They are really nice and I feel great about having them in our house.
What a good idea! (House-swap, I mean.) No wonder you’re able to take off so soon.
Take care, whatever it is you are doing. Looking forward to seeing you –
K.
This is part of why I love Craig’s List.
Congratulations on the big decision, Mary! That’s very exciting stuff. I’m sure it’s going to open up a ton of opportunities. So, roughly how far are you away from Central Park? How about the Hudson? Just trying to picture roughly where you’ll be.
