RE: the computer fan, there are a number of factors that could make the fan more noisy. the most likely is that the bearings are wearing out. Fans are usually a cheap and easy part to replace.
Thanks for the suggestion. I think it’s just a perception difference. New York has a lot of ambient noise which my fan blends into. My parents live on thirteen wooded acres and the house is quiet.
