  1. Oh my, that’s lovely. I wouldn’t call it creepy, but then again I collect Asian ball-jointed resin dolls and…well, it wouldn’t take too much for me to make any two of my dolls resemble those kids. 🙂 I really like it! I must get my hands on the issue for TWO reasons now. 😀

    1. Except it appears I must sit on my hands and wait for a chapbook to be published? Well, neef. *bookmarks Clarkesworld*

      1. No,Julia, you don’t have to wait for the chapbook at all. Clarkesworld comes out with two stories each month, online, for free. You only have to give them money if you want a limited edition chapbook.

Which I’m certainly going to want from this issue.

        1. Yes, I want a hard copy so I can have the pretty artwork to look at offline. ^_^ (And your story too, oh yeah…)

        2. I emailed Eli Effenberger last night, actually, and she directed me to theuntappedsource.com which is where one can order prints of her work in a variety of mediums.

I’ll still be getting the Clarkesworld chapbook, but I get my poster this way!

  2. Very nice! I’m glad Neil stumbled across that excellent piece of creepy artwork to grace the cover of the issue with “Clockwork Chickadee,” and I’ll look forward to reading the story.

  3. that is seriously cool. or maybe it’s seriously kewl. either way, much with the rocking. go you!!!

  4. WHOA! There are clockwork birds in the art… did that happen accidently, or did the artist key off your writing, or what? Beautiful and fascinating!

    1. The art is both an accident and on purpose. When Neal posted the art he said,

It should be fairly obvious by now that I don’t make any effort to tie the Clarkesworld Magazine cover art to a particular story. I like being free from restrictions when it comes to the art I feel like featuring that month. Sometimes, however, it seems like fate intervenes and insists that I pay attention to both.

One of our June stories will be “Clockwork Chickadee” by Mary Robinette Kowal. A couple of days after we bought this story, I was browsing Eli Effenberger’s gallery and found something that screamed “buy me!” As a result, June will be a month of Clockwork Chickadees and Wind-up Ducks.
