I’m celebrating my 44th birthday by having a writing retreat house party at my parents’ home. It’s lovely to be surrounded by a bunch of writers who inspire me and are just plain goofy fun. Last night — well, this isn’t goofy, but is excellent — just after we tipped past midnight into my official

There is a fascinating element to Laura Lam’s new book Pantomime that I can’t tell you about. So instead, I’m just going to show you the official blurb. R.H. Ragona’s Circus of Magic is the greatest circus of Ellada. Nestled among the glowing blue Penglass – remnants of a mysterious civilisation long gone – are wonders

Marie Brennan’s novel A Natural History of Dragons is exactly calculated to please. It is the memoir of Lady Trent and captures the tone of memoirs from the 1800s with delightful aptitude. You know how much I adore language and this novel hits all my sweet spots, as well as offering rollicking adventures with dragons. Oh, and did

Myke Cole’s second novel, Fortress Frontier, is out today and it’s the book that makes you fall in love with military fiction, even if you don’t normally like it. It’s military fantasy — you know, like military SF only with magic. And really good writing. It helps that Myke is actually in the military so the

The Month of Letters Challenge begins tomorrow. Last year, on a whim, I said that people could write to Jane, the main character in my novels. It turns out that this is a really excellent writing exercise because it causes me to think about all the in-between parts of her life because I’m sending them

I’m recording Without a Summer this week and keep having these moments where I realize that I’ve written a word that I’ve never said aloud. “Indecorous” or “coppice.” Normally, I do a significant amount of prep before I record an audio book but the turnaround was pretty tight on this given when Audible needs it and

I absolutely loved The Mad Scientist’s Daughter by Cassandra Rose Clarke. It’s a science fiction novel that is about a young girl who is raised with an android for a tutor. What I find remarkable about the book is that the story stays intimate and never veers into The Fate of the World. In many ways, it feels more like

If you want to know what’s going on with Jane and Vincent, Tor.com has put the first two chapters of Without a Summer up on their website. Here’s the opening paragraph as a teaser: Jane, Lady Vincent could never be considered a beauty, but possessed of a loving husband and admirable talent, had lived thirty years

I bought a new typewriter as an early birthday present for myself. It’s a Corona #3 Special from the 1920s or 30s and it folds. The original Corona #3 was a popular typewriter with war correspondents during WWI due to its compact size. The Special was slightly larger, because it had a longer platen and

I’m heading into the studio next week to record Without a Summer for Audible.com. I am excited to be tackling this but… I need a bit of help. One of the characters is a working class Londoner in 1816. In the written version of the book, Paul Cornell kindly read through and helped adjust the dialogue out

I’d like to invite you to participate in the Month of Letters Challenge. Allow me to explain. Two years ago, I took the month of September off from the internet. I needed to escape from distractions. I invited my readers to write me paper letters and I promised that I would write back. To my

Hey. Want to see a video? David D. Levine has brought us something that I think you’ll like. Now, I have a soft spot for David, so I’m not at all impartial. He and I were in a writing group back in Portland and I think he’s a darn fine short story writer. He’s also

Macmillan library has a quiz on their site, which I’m totally stealing since that one is just for librarians, so if you aren’t a librarian, make a guess here. I’ll draw a name from the people who guess correctly and send out a trade paperback of Glamour in Glass. Let’s say you have until Saturday at
