I’m in Grand Haven and it’s all Seanan McGuire’s fault

Not that I mind, but I’m in Grand Haven instead of home, because I’m recording two new Seanan McGuire novels this week. I love recording her October Daye novels and am delighted that I get to do two more.

I thought about bringing the Hugo with me, because I love it and it is a shiny, shiny rocket, but decided to send it back to Portland instead. Truly, having a rocket in the recording booth with me would not improve anything. As much as I luvs it.

The trip here was comic.

I got up at 3:30 Sunday morning to leave the hotel at 4:00 am. This is after going to bed at 2:30. I’d planned, initially, to be a good girl and go to bed early, but that was before, um, I won a Hugo. To quote Eliza Doolittle:

Bed! Bed! I couldn’t go to bed!
My head’s too light to try to set it down! Sleep! Sleep!
I couldn’t sleep tonight.
Not for all the jewels in the crown!

So! Up after an hour of sleep-ish and down to catch a cab. At the airport, it turned out that I was on the same flight with a number of con-goers, including Yanni Kuznia and her husband Brian, and N. K. Jemisin. This was lovely and gave us a little chance to chat since I’d barely seen either of them at the con.

Yanni and Ryan were going on to Michigan through Detroit so it looked like we’d be travelling most of the day together. In Salt Lake City, we said goodbye to Nora, who had a tighter connection, and stopped for breakfast.  Ryan asked me, with all the travelling I’ve done, if I’ve ever missed a flight. I have, but only once because of my own stupidity.

It’s now twice.

It’s like this. We were sitting waiting for the plane to depart when they announced that the TSA needed to do additional id screening.  So we all hauled out IDs and boarding passes. I finally look at mine. My transfer wasn’t through Detroit, it was through Minneapolis. Ryan, Yanni, and I all started giggling because he had just asked me about this.

I totally missed my connection. Honestly, I usually look at my tickets.  I will claim sleep deprivation combined with frequent transfers through Detroit on the way to or from Grand Rapids, but really– it was just plain stupid.

Delta was lovely when I explained what I’d done and got me on the Detroit flight on standby.  In Detroit, the first flight they’d booked me on was oversold, so they got me onto a second flight that put me into Grand Rapids only an hour later than my original flight.

My luggage, which should have beaten me here, wasn’t.  It arrived this morning. Sigh.

So… I’m fatigued, but here with two manuscripts and will spend the rest of the week locked in a small closet with a microphone.  That I’m here is Seanan’s fault. That I had trouble getting here is all mine.

  1. Ooh, I’m delighted to know you’ll be reading them. I saw when Seanan said there would be audio ones of the more recent Toby books and I was hoping (maybe even holding my breath) that you’d be reading them…

  2. I continue to be bummed that you’re in my area when I’m not there. Not too bummed, because instead I’m enjoying London, but still: bummed.

Also, I think you misheard/misremembered Yanni’s husband’s name. Unless she got a new one recently, but the old one didn’t look like he was ready for a trade-in the last I saw him.

  3. And the game of marygoround continues.. 🙂

David: I’m guessing walked to the wrong connecting gate with Ryan and Yanni and thus missed the takeoff of the correct flight.

  4. I am hooked on October Daye books. I blame you.

Actually, I thank you (despite it being a bad thing for a fairy – but I’m not one…are you?) – I was going through a dry spell in books. It’s been good to stave myself of sleep as I explore fairy California – it’s been a long time since I’ve been this engaged.

    1. I would say that I’m sorry, but I really love the October Daye books. I think Seanan does a bang-up job with them.

If I may… the best way to make sure there are more of them is to write a review on the Audible/Amazon/wherever-you-purchased-it page. Publishers do read them.

      1. Er…library…and then I went and bought some of them at the Borders going-out-of-business sale…I’m such a horrible person…

I love them muchly – while I think the exposition is a bit clunky, the characters and especially the worldbuilding are so engrossing and thoughtful.

Is it bad if I write Amazon reviews for something I read at the library?

  5. So, my copy of One Salt Sea arrived last week, and I’ve been listening to it as I drive (which goes slowly, since I dislike driving, and only do it when absolutely necessary.  But I do teach an hour away, so at least once a week I’ll get two solid hours done).  But I just got to Tybalt’s first appearance, and I cackled madly for half and hour as your read him with the perfect combination of arrogance, vulnerability, and humor.  Bravo!
