Puppetry

Middle Woman – Audio

This weekend, I recorded Orson Scott Card’s Middle Woman, which will appear as an audio bonus in the next issue of Intergalactic Medicine Show. This has long been one of my favorite stories and I’ve had the passing fantasy of adapting it to puppet stage. This is much better–it’s like puppetry for radio. I sent […]

Sesame Street Update

I really thought that I had told everyone what the final result of my audition was, but I just had another person ask me, so evidently I didn’t. Sesame Street cast an in-house puppeteer without going to callbacks, which is pretty much what I expected to happen. Even so, it was a fun ride.

Foam, glorious foam

We actually did the foam work last week, but that was while my computer was wonky, so you’re just getting to see the pictures now. Basically, I’ve constructed Keenan’s head out of two types of foam, using different densities depending on what I need them to do. After I do that, I install the lower

Making puppets

I’ve picked up a gig building a new set of puppets for the Portland chapter of Kids on the Block, which wants to upgrade the kind of puppets they use. I’ve begun the construction process. We started with drawings and I’ve made clay sculptures of those. For the next step, I cover the clay sculptures

Audition completed

That went surprisingly well. When I finished, the agent said, “Well. I wish I had seen you first. You would have set the bar for everyone else.” And went on to talk about the way folks couldn’t handle the monitor and the puppetry. I sort of knew that something like that would happen. At national

Hot and Sweaty

The interesting thing about Little Shop, for me, is that it’s the only time when I use the sentence, “My favorite flavor of Gatorade is Lemon-lime.” I go through a bottle a show, usually, but the puppets in this production are so hot that I’m going through a bottle an act. The other issue, is

Making repairs

These puppets are pretty badly damaged. I spent the day pulling out broken ribs and replacing them. I’m sure they were lovely when they were new, but they were not designed to last as long as they have. I’ve also developed some nasty bruising on my leg from the plant, and today was my first

Malibu

This is my first time in the L.A. area, aside from flying through on airplanes. So far I have seen smog but not traffic. I look forward to that and the other delights in the coming week. I’m staying at the producer’s home, she’s very nice and has been in the business forever. You’ve seen

Finis!

We finished the puppets today! The only thing left to do is wait for the truck tomorrow. Well, I’m also updating the packing instructions with photos. This is my friend Lance posing like one of those models from the 1950 instruction manuals. It amuses me a great deal that he’s pretending to read the instructions

Little Shop

Lance and I picked up the 715 pound crate that my Little Shop puppets are shipped in. We took it to our new workshop space and opened it to reveal chaos. The puppets were badly packed and severely damaged. Grr. So, I’ll have to do a major rebuild to get them in working shape for
