Meetings

I can’t remember if I mentioned that I’m the puppeteer liason, which means I get to sit in on production meetings to represent the puppeteers. Tonights was three hours long, but felt like we got some good work done. I’m not going into detail, but thought you’d at least like to know why I wasn’t […]

Me as origami

I wish we had taken a picture of this, so I’ll attempt to provide a word-picture of the endeavor. The Mayor, normally played by David Feldman, had to enter a scene with hedge clippers, talk to Ziggy and then exit. Because of a number of variables, including that darn bicycle, we had to be on

Puppet Relay Race

Today one of the puppets had to ride a bike through a scene which involved screwing three of our rollie carts together. Two of them supported Thor, and one had a kids bike screwed to it. A twenty-foot pole pushed the whole shebang through the frame. The only problem was that we couldn’t back the

National Theatre

Rob and I went to the National Theater to see Klaufar og kóngsdætur, Ævintýraheimur H.C. Andersens (Rude Lads and Royal Ladies,The Fairytale world of H.C. Andersen) which had some puppetry by my friend Bernd Ogrodnik. I was expecting the show to be forty-five minutes, which is how long most kid’s shows are in the states.

First day on set

Sort of…really, today was the first day the puppets were on the call sheet, but we were the last shot scheduled. As you might guess, we did not get to that shot. They wrapped right before we came up. Julie had her headset on and was on deck; we were that close. So we’ll be

Coughing

I’m tired of it already. I had a fit today that sounded like I had consumption. Okay, not really, but it felt like someone ought to be concerned that I might have consumption. Basically, my sore throat has become a nasty chest cold which is aggravating my respirtory infection induced asthma, which is further aggravated

Glove prototype

Today I went in around eleven o’clock to consult with Rosa and Sigga, our puppet wranglers, and Gummi Thor about new gloves for our puppets. Thor has come up with this new system so we can have wrist-entry for the live hand puppets instead of just elbow entry. It looks good, although there’s some questions

Watching Arabian Nights

I got to watch a rehearsal of Arabian Nights today. The puppets look fabulous and the actors are doing a really good job. Everyone says nice things about the set, but I naturally have some concerns. I’ll get to talk to the TD tomorrow. Meanwhile, I’ve just come back from a very nice dinner with

Chattacon 31

On January 21, I will be on a panel at Chattacon 31, a science-fiction convention in Chattanooga, called Writing – when can I quit my day job. I told them that my day job was in puppetry. This should be interesting.

Center for Puppetry Arts

After the High Museum we all went to the Center for Puppetry Arts to see Shoemaker and the Elves. Tears of Joy will be restaging it and I am slated to be the designer for their production so it seemed like a good idea to catch the show while I was here.

Coaching puppetry

Wow. I feel like I’ve been hit by a truck. I went back to the school I taught at a couple of weeks ago for a follow-up visit. The plan was to watch snippets of the kids’ shows and give them feedback. In the space of two hours I saw 30+ playlets. My eyes were

A lovely day

Ah, today has been lovely. Rob and I slept in, which is always a good way to start the day. Then Wayne came by and took us out to brunch at Beaterville. I did a little housecleaning and worked on the puppets, because I finally have my sewing machine back. Thank heavens. It had a

Puppets, novels and errands

Today I started with Physical therapy. In good news, we’ve switched from focusing on stabalizing the shoulder, to strengthening it. I was a little sore after therapy, but I think it’s all good. After that, worked on finishing the stitching on those Kids on the Block puppets. My sewing machine jammed about three weeks ago,

Glimpses of The Uncanny Valley

The Uncanny Valley is part of a thesis by Doctor Masahiro Mori which “represents the point at which a person observing the creature or object in question sees something that is nearly human, but just enough off-kilter to seem eerie or disquieting.” The article is targetted at SF and Fantasy writers but I couldn’t help

Teaching puppetry

I completely forgot to mention that I taught a puppetry workshop yesterday. Three hours and 64 students. It was a marathon, but they were darn good kids. It was a group of gifted and talented eighth graders and they were a blast to work with. Disciplined, creative, and excited to be there. By the end
