Returning from the 47th Nebula Awards Weekend

The Nebula Awards Weekend was amazing. It was my last event as SFWA’s VP and it was a good note to go out on. Peggy Rae Sapienza and her whole team did an amazing job.

I’m currently sitting here in the lobby of the Hyatt Crystal City with Todd Vandemark, SFWA’s website content editor, on my right. As far as we know, we’re the last two attendees of the 47th Nebula Awards Weekend still here. We both have evening flights so we’re having the tamest Dead Dog Party ever.

In particular, the Nebula Awards Ceremony was a lovely thing. Connie Willis’s acceptance of her grandmaster award made me laugh and cry, just like her fiction does.

Here are the 47th Nebula Award recipients for this year.

  • Novel Winner: Among Others, Jo Walton (Tor)
  • Novella Winner: ”The Man Who Bridged the Mist,” Kij Johnson (Asimov’s Science Fiction, October/November 2011)
  • Novelette Winner: ”What We Found,” Geoff Ryman (The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, September/October 2011)
  • Short Story Winner: ”The Paper Menagerie,” Ken Liu (The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, March/April 2011)
  • Ray Bradbury Award for Outstanding Dramatic Presentation Winner: Doctor Who: “The Doctor’s Wife,” Neil Gaiman (writer), Richard Clark (director) (BBC Wales)
  • Andre Norton Award for Young Adult Science Fiction and Fantasy Book Winner: The Freedom Maze, Delia Sherman (Big Mouth House)
  • 2011 DAMON KNIGHT GRAND MASTER AWARD: Connie Willis
  • SOLSTICE AWARD: Octavia Butler (posthumous) and John Clute
  • SERVICE TO SFWA AWARD: Bud Webster

I’m so proud of all of the winners. Such good fiction.

One of the personal highlights for the weekend was getting to meet our keynote speaker, Col. Michael Fincke. The astronaut. Seriously– you want to see a room full of SF writers reduced to tears? Invite this man to talk to you about space exploration. He’s funny, charming, and… and an astronaut.

I so wanted his job.
