Pictures of my office in Chicago

At long last. My office is assembled enough that I can show you photos of it. There’s a very narrow window of time in which I can show it off after the boxes are all put away before, you know, it descends into the chaos that is my more normal working environment.

This is the entrance to the office, off of the living room. The Japanese screen can get extended across the arch to provide some privacy. To give a sense of scale, which is hard to get in these photos. The screen is taller than I am.

We have really tall ceilings here. I love them.

To the right, in the office is a door leading out onto our balcony. I’ve been using that as my annex for letter writing and the like. It is very nice to have this additional space.

I need to get a floor lamp for sitting in the rocking chair and reading, but other than that, it’s very cozy.

The next two photos show you the view from the door of the office and then standing at the far wall looking back to the arch

Have I mentioned how much I love the stained glass windows?

My desk belonged to my grandmother, Robinette, and was built by my grandfather. I put a breakfast tray on top so that I can use it as a standing desk.

  1. I’m quite curious about the triangle of paper I can see in the bottom two shots. Am I correct that it says “Goofing off” and “Hard at Work”? What a clever way to signal whether others can interrupt you. Does it work? I think I would forget to rotate it when I switched modes.

Edited to add: What a lovely office. I’m jealous of your stained glass and balcony. My office has no windows.

    1. It says Writing, Other Work, and Goofing Off. And it actually works. If you think of it like traffic lights, Writing is a red light — don’t even try to speak to me. Other work is a yellow light — approach with caution. Goofing Off is a green light — come bother me!

  2. It’s a nice workspace to be sure but the best part is the kitty on the ottoman.  Living rooms always need a kitty on an ottoman.

  3.  That’s a great space! I love the stained glass windows too – and of course the dress form. 🙂  And the kitty.

  4. Looks like your home.  Sad it’s so far away, but it’s unmistakably yours.  I’m especially fond of the dress form next to the bookcase… and is that the knight laying on the dresser?

    1. The space is just large enough to bring in a table for doing sewing work when I want to. The knight is by the fireplace in another room. I think what you’re seeing is some mercury glass and a scroll.

  5. I cannot comprehend the scale of that first picture.  I keep trying to insert a person next to the screen, and it just doesn’t work.  Your house was built by giants.
