I realized that I haven’t shown you a picture of our fireplace yet.
Today was the first time I lit it, which was very cozy. It was also a little challenging. The key that goes with the fireplace was missing when we moved in. In theory, these take universal keys. But… all of the keys are sockets (females) that are suppose to slot onto a quarter inch square plug (male) that controls the start valve in the fireplace. Only, our fireplace has a female control valve, which means that I need a male key. According to two different hardware stores, there’s no such thing.
So I made one.
A little bit of quarter inch square brass, my vise, and voila — we can turn the fireplace on.
Nice red vase on the mantel. What is the shiney pointy thing on the right?
It’s for spindling rejection letters.
“So I made one.” What a great problem solver! I love your spunky attitude and amazing skills.
Yes, the red on top looks even better when the fireplace is lit. Cozy indeed!

Hi Mary,
I have a remodeling company, and we do a lot of work on older houses. I can honestly say that I’ve never seen a female fireplace control.
This is a bit of a wonky request, but is there any way you could post a picture of that hardware? I’m asking partially because this could come in handy professionally, and partially because I just love this kind of stuff. 🙂
giggle, snort.
rejection letter spindle, giggle.

There’s no such thing — and yet you had one. This is the way of the world. (grin)
