A night on the town in Portland

I’ve just come in from a lovely evening with my friend -e- who I don’t spend nearly enough time with. We talked about everything under the sun and a few things beyond in the very pleasant atmosphere of The Secret Society.  During the course of the evening, I’d taken one of the ARCs of Shades of Milk and Honey to show her and while doing so, the waiter came to the table.

I lifted the book and said, “May I just…” I stopped unable to express the giddiness and pointed at the cover. “This is me.”

He was effusive with congratulations and then spent the rest of the evening in the perfect balance of attentive and leaving us alone to chat. Until he dropped the check and then he leaned over to me and said, “I bought one of your drinks for you. I know how hard it is to get published.”

So sweet! It is hard to get published but it’s harder to face the people who think that anyone can write and that there’s no effort involved.  So, it was a lovely evening made lovelier by a very nice waiter.
