LeeCon – Day 2
I’m tired and I’m having fun. My writing brain is getting a good swift charge from the company at hand.

I’m at a Codex writer’s mini-conference in Murfreesboro, TN this weekend. I had planned on driving back to Chattanooga tonight, but several of the other writers are having horrible travel karma. My share of the travel karma, was fairly mild. I arrived, got out of the car to say “hello” and the door swung shut
Today, besides writing more of the Landon Manor story, I also did some serious editing of Waiting for Rain. I’ve taken it from 9900 words to 8875. That’s feeling like a much more reasonable length.
Snuggle up with the winter issue of Shimmer and sink into the heat of Alabama with Sell Your Soul to the Devil Blues by Tom Pendergrass, pick the brain of multiple Hugo-award winning editor Ellen Datlow, and listen to the Silent Folk in Jay Lake’s The Black Back-Lands. There’s more: the nursing home adventures in

I began work on a new short with the working title The Case of Landon Manor. It’s a supernatural mystery set in 1924. My main character is a glamorous young heiress, who also happens to be a medium. I’m 2000 words into it and having a lot of fun. Here’s the first beginning, although that’s

I’m pleased to report that I finished Waiting for Rain, finally. I thought I would never reach the end of this short story. I’m not even sure why it took so long. But, thanks to my New Year’s resolution, I wrote the last 4000 words in a week. Rob is going to help me with

In the world of small things that excite me, we just received a bunch of mail forwarded from our home in Portland. In the box of mail was my check from Strange Horizons for Portrait of Ari. There’s something about getting paid that makes me feel like I really did something. I’ll get all excited
For those of you who received ginger syrup from us this year and were wondering what to do with it. We’ve recently discovered that it’s a lovely addition to gin and tonics. Since I don’t want anyone to feel left out, here’s a recipe for your own gingered gin and tonics. Once you have the

On January 21, I will be on a panel at Chattacon 31, a science-fiction convention in Chattanooga, called Writing – when can I quit my day job. I told them that my day job was in puppetry. This should be interesting.
Tonight, for a simple meal I made a split-pea soup with carmelized onions and cumin. I have to say, that I really liked this recipe. Split-pea soup is one of those things which doesn’t translate well to a vegitarian version, because it seems to need the addition of ham in some form. This didn’t.
This evening we went to hear a group called The Goldens play at an opening for a furniture store. You might recognize the handsome man with the fiddle as my father. The other men are some of his picking buddies. He played the saw too, but I didn’t get a photo of that. Apparently one
I can tell that Rob felt better because he started cleaning the house. Mind you, this is my mother’s house which looks as if it is ready for a Better Homes and Gardens camera crew to come through the door at any moment. So Rob had to work hard to find something that needed cleaning.
I saw this on The Slush God Speaketh and thought I’d play along. Page 123 Meme The rules: 1. Grab the nearest book. 2. Open the book to page 123. 3. Find the fifth sentence. 4. Post the text of the sentence in your journal along with these instructions. 5. Don’t search around and look
