Rob and I headed down to the Kolaport today because I wanted to hit that booth that had the SF books again. I picked up some beauties all of which look like pulp, untill you start to pay attention to the author’s name. Exhibit One. The banner at the top says, “A Madcap Blonde and

I started today by sanding the bear down to remove the rough spots. The white patches are where the fiberglass has been sanded. I cut out the eyes of the bear, which I’ll replace later, with a tile-cutting bit on my dremel tool. While it is possible to sand the eyes down to a glossy,

An artist just asked me, “Is there anything you’re particularly fond of, any imagery that your magazine leans towards?” Why, yes! Thank you for asking. If we start with the belief that one is submitting work that is well-rendered, with an understanding of composition, or, as Beth puts it, art that is not lame, then

Okay. At some point, every SF story on the planet is going to hit some handwavium. You know the thing I’m talking about, that magic point where you just have to make stuff up in order to cover the gap between what is possible and what you think might be possible sometime in the future.

Round two of fiberglassing the bear went much better. The glass on thmpts in the morning after he left so the fumes would have a chance to dissapate. This is way I was not going to do the fiberglass work at the workshop. Today I did the last of the fiberglassing for an audience of

This weekend Rob and I went to see The Abduction from the Seraglio at the Icelandic Opera with Jochen, from work, and his wife. It was, as Rob says, a very satisfactory evening. The voices were good and they could act! The staging of this production was very good. I was able to follow the
Today is Steven Savile’s birthday. To celebrate, I am reading his novel Inheritance. So far, it is grim and horrific. Those aren’t normally compliments but are completely appropriate for a vampire novel. He also has managed to get humor in there too, which is astounding in a book with the undead rising all around. I’m

Jodi is in from NYC to do a little bit of ADR and to do some visiting. He’s here until Monday. Yay! We’re headed out for dinner tonight. On Friday night, Julie arrives and then Sarah on Sunday. It’s like old home week.
To celebrate, we’ve got a puzzle which will show you the amazing cover art of David Ho. Now, as much as I love this puzzle, there are occasions when the mouse behaves oddly and grabs the wrong piece. Sorry about that; I wish I knew how to fix it but the puzzle is enough fun

When people meet me and learn that I’m from North Carolina, the first thing that they say are, “But you don’t have a southern accent.” It happens so often, that you get major bonus points for not saying it. There are variations, of course, such as, “You must have worked hard to lose your accent.”
To celebrate finishing the proof-reading of the Autumn issue of Shimmer, I offer you a wordsearch based on the Autumn issue. Each word represents a story in this issue. For the fiberglass resin I’m using, I have to use 99% resin to 1% hardener. At the moment, I’m having to face the bitter truth that I mis-judged the amount of hardener and didn’t put enough in. This means that the fiberglass I just put on the bear’s face is remaining a gooey, toxic mess.
I noticed this on Oliver’s blog and it amused me. HowManyOfMe.com There are:72people with my namein the U.S.A. How many have your name? If I use my maiden name, there are 3007 people. According to this site, there are 3,956,182 people in the U.S. with the first name Mary and it is the 5th most

I edited two stories and submitted them yesterday. My requested rewrite went off to the editor last week, so now it’s just a waiting game. I finished proofing the Autumn issue of Shimmer, which goes to the printer on Tuesday. In short, no more writing reasons to put off Good Housekeeping, so I pulled it
