I really used to believe that of course there would always be a Jim Henson in the world, because how could we get through the week without the Muppets?
(and without him, how would I know to call our dog the “muppet-puppy?”)
I live in the DC area, and Jim Henson started here. I remember the old Wilkins Coffee commercials with proto-Kermit. The University of Maryland, Hensen’s alma mater, has a nice memorial of him and Kermit on a bench. Lots of folks get their picture taken with him, which I think he would like.
I watched some of those on YouTube a few months ago, my first time seeing them (I was only 8 when he passed away), and needed to dry my eyes afterward. Very moving stuff.
How appropriate that we just finished watching two episodes from Season 1 of The Muppet Show tonight.
I hadn’t realized today was the day. I can’t believe it’s been 19 years!
I actually cried when I heard Jim Henson died (I was 23 btw). It was just so sudden and shocking. The Muppets have always been special to me, ever since Sesame Street when I was 3, and my (now deceased) brother and I would watch The Muppet Show together every week.
