At home, that evening, Jane attempted to carry on the entirety of the dinner conversation by herself. Vincent stared into his soup and made the occasional obligatory reply, but she had no real sense that he heard her. Twice, he drew breath as though to speak and, upon seeing Melody, exhaled and asked Jane to pass the salt. The second time, she was obliged to point out that he already had it.

I crossed the halfway point for NaNoWriMo today and am now at 26,500 words. This is ahead of the game for NaNo but I feel safer if I have a buffer. My goal is to write 2,000 words per day which means that I should be at 28,000 today for my own goals. To complete NaNo on time, I’d just need to be at 23,333 today. It’s fascinating being both ahead and behind at the same time.
