Mary Robinette Kowal

Well Ernie, old friend of mine, I’ve got strep throat. I haven’t had that since high school. I’m miserable. I performed today, but I’m miserable. [1. I should explain that Pied Piper was a 45 minute operetta with 35 minutes of sung music, 2 performers, and 18 puppets. At one point we had 5 active puppets

I’m sick. It’s our 1st day on the road and I’ve got a sore throat and a fever.  We’re at the E–‘s house. J–‘s family is really nice. His sister K– has given up her bedroom for me. We left at 10:30 this morning and got here at about 7:00 pm. I have to sleep.

Today I woke up at 10:07 which was good ’cause I wanted to sleep in but bad ’cause M– had rehearsal at 10:00 and I was supposed to drive him. I went into TOJ at about 1:00 to paint the rock wall [1. I will say that I find it interesting that we had begun

Technically yes, it’s Saturday but hey–. Today J– and I finished the 1st day of the Pied Piper tour. R– said it was so much better that it wasn’t even the same show. Our set up still takes 1hr 45min hopefully that’ll get faster. F–, M–, and I went to see The Blues Brothers at the Bagdad.

1st night on the road. We’re performing in Pullayup, WA tomorrow. Did 2 shows today at MLK. They were okay. Not good, but okay. The show is there. Our lights kept blowing in the 2nd show. A reporter from the Oregonian came out to take pictures. J– & I read to each other on the way

Bad dress, good show, right? I hope so.[1. I sure wish Retro Mary had been more specific about what went wrong. I no longer have memories of the dress rehearsal.]

I just got home from TOJ. L–,  & K–, & J– stayed late & helped me. Got a lot of work done.

J2– was not pleased about the Piper poster. We’ll see what happens. Left work at 11:00pm. Really tired. Ran Piper 3 times. The mikes are potentially problematic. Feedback from hell.

Yay! I got the children cut out & appliqued to the Piper’s cape today! It took me from 1 til 7:30 to do it what with picking the fabric & everything. Had dinner with F–. That was a good, good thing.

Drew the children silhouettes today. Have to talk to J2– on Monday ’cause our names aren’t on the Piper poster.

I’m so tired I don’t even remember today. Saw Pirates of Penzance. Thumbs down. Rehearsed Dybbuck. Did production on Piper. Painted the Rat Flat.

Went to see Speed with M– at the Mission. We had a full day of Piper rehearsal today. Hurray. R– is being quite sensitive about how tough this is physically. [1. Piper remains the most physically demanding show I’ve done, including Little Shop. When we started J– and I could’t get all the way through the

J– just left. We watched a video of a Piper run-through that we did for an audience. Very rough. But, the show is there, it just needs polishing. My manipulation was crap through most of it. But I think it’s ’cause my focus was on blocking, lines & music. Argle. Today was also the 1st day with
