It’s my birthday!
I’m thirty-seven today. In an interesting twist, I was born on the anniversary of Mary, Queen of Scots’ beheading. When I was younger, I used to think that was significant.

I just sold Cerbo in Vitra ujo to Apex Digest. It will probably be in Issue 6, which comes out in June, but I’ll post for certain when I know the date. I’m thrilled, although it is an icky, icky story–my first foray into horror. This will be the first sale that I don’t give

I would sum up the weekend but Steve Savile did such a nice job covering the writing portion, that I’ll just talk about Grandma’s birthday party. I made the little packets of recipe cards, each containing fourteen recipes daintily tied with a sheer blue bow. We had a basked of those sitting on the table

This is one of my favorite Orson Welles sound bites ever. You can’t hear this too many times.

This is one of Grandma’s recipes. I’m putting together recipe cards as party favors for her 101st birthday party this weekend. We’re having it at her house–yes, my grandmother lives by herself and she can still thread a needle. She’s pretty remarkable. This is one of my favorites at Christmas. They’re like miniature pecan pies.
There was an article on Wired News about Western Union ceasing its telegram service. This makes me strangely sad. I’ve only sent two telegrams, both after our wedding, but telegrams played such an important role in our history that I feel like something is lost. I recognize that they serve no useful function anymore, still

We have our official departure date to Iceland, with tickets and everything. Rob and I will board a plane from Atlanta on February 19 at 2:45. We’ll head up to JFK for a three hour layover and then off to Iceland and Lazytown. It is such a relief to have something that is set in

Tonight I made this recipe for red-wine spaghetti with broccoli that I found at Epicurious.com. You actually boil the pasta in the red-wine. It was very good and quite light. I also made the salad dressing from this salad, and liked it quite a bit.

If you are curious about how Portrait of Ari started, I can tell you the whole sordid story. I started writing a novel when I was in highschool, and things being what they were, it took me ten years or so to finish the thing. The plot is flawed beyond repair, and believe me, I

Today I installed a floresent light above the stove in the apartment. Rob picked it up for me at Home Depot when he was out getting a replacement part for the toilet, which was leaking. The light helps a lot with the stove. I also submitted Cerbo en Vitro ujo today and started on a

While I normally avoid discussing politics on my journal, I watched the State of the Union tonight. I’m…unsurprised and yet still angry. I do not expect everyone who reads my blog to share my views, but I do feel that if I say nothing that implies my acceptance. So, I thought I would share the

I went to Nia’s house for dinner last night with a gaggle of other writers. Truly, I only drove as far as Murfreesboro and then carpooled the rest of the way to Nashville with Steve and Alethea. It was fun and the food was yummy. We had black beans, tomatillo rice, mache salad with almonds

The truck dropped its entire gearbox, so they have to get a new truck. We’re hoping that they’ll be able to get one today, though not holding our breath, because it’s supposed to rain for the next two days, which means that we’d have to wait another four days past that four the ground to
