Is it odd that those don’t wow me because they make perfect sense?
(I’m not even sure that sentence makes sense.)
I mean, yes, they’re very cool, but they don’t surprise me in any way. Maybe it’s that I can’t have been much older than ten or eleven when I first got my hands on Eric Kenneway’s Complete Origami, which taught me how to make flexagons and describes troublewits. Shlian certainly has a knack for careful choice of materials and proper exactitude in manufacture, which are essential for this sort of thing, but I wouldn’t say that his work is wholly novel, though the twist-to-lock idea is pretty neat.
