We’ve joined Sarah, Julie and Emily to work with an Icelandic tutor once a week. It’s odd because I’ve been feeling like I’ll never learn this language, but at the class I was definitely ahead of the others. It doesn’t feel like it when I’m out trying to use Icelandic “in the wild.”
Genta, our tutor is not a native speaker. She’s Albanian, with a degree in Icelandic studies, and works as a translator. Her biggest piece of advice was to not let the natives switch to English, even if we are forced to do baby-talk to communicate.
Some folks have asked me what Icelandic sounds like. If you’re interested, you can go to this website, which has online Icelandic lessons, and hear audio samples.
