Pantry Progress

I only have six boards left. I scrape the floor for about an hour and then I have to take a break. I can’t pause too long, because CZ Becker is coming to refinish the floor at the end of the week. Yikes! We’ll be locked out of the kitchen for four days. I could, […]

Mmm pie!

Those were apparently my beloved husband’s first words. No clich&#233d “Mamma” or “Dada” for him. He went straight for the pie. Not just any pie, either, but a My-T-Fine Lemon Merangue pie. We received several packages of the neccesary filling from his mother for Christmas. I made one this weekend. I am happy to report

The Hobbit

I went to see, or listen to, a live radio performance of The Hobbit that Willamette Radio Workshop did. Rob was doing the audio engineering. It was a lot of fun and the audience went nuts over it. The thing that struck me was the difference between listening and watching. I enjoyed it more when

Let there be light!

Ah, isn’t it beautiful? Granted, it’s hard to tell with this photo since the only source of lighting was the light itself. I had to doctor the photo to have it make any sense at all. I’ll take a new photo tomorrow and try to show you more detail as well as the context in

Not as bad

The wiring was not in as bad a state as I’d feared. The old cloth wiring had just been pushed above the crossbar so it looked like we had bare wires in the ceiling. When I pulled the crossbar, and a little plaster down, it was easy to snug the cloth insulation back into place

The new light

Well, our new light arrived from Rejuvenation tonight and it is lovely. We assembled it with no problems, removed the old fixture and then had a grim reminder than we live in a 1907 house. The old knob and tube wiring is still in the ceiling, minus the insulation. At least on the visible part

Arabian Nights

I just got off the phone with Chris Parks at McCarter and Emily DeCola. Chris is directing Arabian Nights and Emily is doing puppet design; I’m the scenic designer. We started our planning when I flew to NYC last summer to do initial design discussions. Today we planned out our schedule. Which means I now

Hot, hot, hot!

I just caught my floor on fire. Well, okay. That’s a little bit of an exaggeration. A piece of the paper that’s glued to the pantry floor ignited to a flame like a birthday candle. I whacked it with my paint scraper and it went out. I’ve made little embers glow before but this was

A bid on the floor

I talked to the guy who will probably refinish our floor. He specializes in older homes and has great references and his bid was lower than I expected it to be. Whee. I need to talk it over with Rob first, but hopefully we should have a beautiful fir floor soon.

Novel developments

Today I have been writing. I’ve been a little stalled on my novel because I knew what the antagonist needed to do to move the plot forward, but I’d failed to give them a reason to do it. I had a motive, the bad guy did not. After Rob and I went to bed last

Pantry progress report #3

Rob went down to a WRW rehearsal today, so I took advantage of the time alone to scrape tar paper off the floor in the pantry. It’s fairly stinky so I don’t like doing it when he’s in the house. I wear a respirator while I’m working; asking him to wear one around the house
