Wuthering

What more do I need to say? The wind is wuthering around the building and blowing the rain horizontally across the windows. I working this morning as the Mayor’s live hands and didn’t notice the wind in the studio, but in the greenroom, with its banks of windows, the wuthering is very noticeable.

  1. Yes, you do need to say more. I can’t find wuthering in either my 1956 Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary or your 1853 Webster’s Dictionary Unabridged.
Googling just turned up Wuthering Heights.

  2. Well, if you’ve read Wuthering Heights then the meaning is clear. It means blowing hard, and making noise like…well, say the sound wuthering and you’ll get a sense of the sound that the wind makes.
