Chapter 11 is up for those of you reading along

Even in Hawaii, I’m trying to make sure you’re getting at least one new chapter a day. So… Chapter 11 of the Kiss Me Twice draft is up.

Yes, even though I am in on an island paradise, I am spending part of each day trying to write 2000 words per day. How am I doing? Not bad. Yesterday I had a lower word count of actual new words because I was reworking a scene from the novella to mesh with the novel. So although my wordcount was only 1122 for the day, my forward progress was good. At the moment, the overall wordcount on the novel is 56,308 and I’m aiming for in the 70k-80k range for the finished novel.

  1. How does that finished novel wordcount compare with your other novels? That’s always my biggest obsession when it comes to my own writing, word count.

    1. Shades of Milk and Honey is about 75k. I think Without a Summer is in the 85k range.

Honestly? Don’t think about wordcount unless you have a specific contractual reason to do so. I have a novel that we’re shopping that’s 125k because that’s how long the story needed to be.

Now, when I was trying to break in with shorts, I was aiming for stories that were in the 4k range because they seemed easier to sell. For those, I tried to pick stories that would work in that range, but I did not try to take stories and force them to be short. Does the distinction make sense?

      1. Yes, it does. My problem is that I usually end up trying to write longer than the story needs to be. I tend to be very terse as a writer–not a lot of description, fairly linear plots–and I get paranoid that the story’s not going to be long enough and I end up stressing about it. I’m probably better suited for writing shorter form stories–novellas or short stories.
