Change of travel plans

Last Friday, my mom took a tumble down the stairs. I’d mentioned this in a couple of private forums, but with Mom’s okay am actually blogging about it. She’s going to be fine and it’s not the sort of fall that require surgery, but she’s got a cast on that’s keeping her pretty immobile.

I’m flying to Chattanooga on Saturday to help my folks out for a couple of weeks. I am, I think, going to try to teach my dad to cook.

I know.

But he’s clever and it’s just like mixing emulsion for silk screening, but not poisonous. Usually. We haven’t decided how long I’m going to stay yet, but I wanted to keep you up to date on which time zone I’m in.

  1. Best wishes for your mother healing well.

On your father learning to cook: The simplest cookbooks I’ve seen are for college students who’ve never cooked before. -“This is water. Boiling water means….”-

Cookbooks for children aren’t as simple, but have better illustrations.

    And yes, I’m quite serious.

  2. When Rob flew home to Hawaii
recently to ‘help out’ his folks after
his mom had retinal detachment surgery, he
told Mary,”I can cook.” “My dad has never
done anything in the kitchen except tuna fish
salad sandwiches.” Mom and Pop Kowal were
    VERY grateful for Robert’s filial
    ‘kitchen aide!’

  3. Wishes for a speedy recovery to your Mom.

As a Capricorn Who Hates Cooking (why aren’t these food items bending to my will?) I’ve learned to love a stew of sauteed onions, carrots, potatoes, bay leaf, black beans, rice, and broccoli. You can make a lot, freeze the extra, and not have to cook for days.

Oh. Right. Tuna casserole. With enough planning I can do that.

OK; yes, my partner accuses me of over-using re-heating as a cooking technique — but I can bake chocolate chip cookies, too.

    Good luck!

  4. Oh bless your heart, how distressing. So glad she didn’t need surgery and is going to be okay. Wishing her a speedy recovery and you the patience of a saint in teaching your dad to cook!
