Footloose

We went to Footloose, which was quite the experience. The set design was inventive, the choreography was fun but the voices were weak. I think there were four good singers in the cast, and everyone else was flat. I really enjoyed the evening, but did have to adjust the lens that I viewed it with. […]

Picnic

Today was another gorgeous day in Iceland. After work, we all went to Emily’s house for a barbecue. She made hamburgers, hot dogs, vegetable skewers and deviled eggs. I made potato salad and a corn salad. Both recipes are winners, so I thought I’d share, since the summer picnic season is here. Danish Potato Salad

Dinosaurs and Screening

In the greenroom we played Bone Wars, a Ruthless Game of Paleontology. I picked it up on a whim at Readercon because Jodi and I had been working on a show about Mary Anning. Initially the rules looked intimidatingly complex, but once we started playing it was loads of fun. After work, we went to

What a day

What a day, what a day. Julie normally does the live hands for Jodi, but she wasn’t in today because it didn’t look like he’d need live hands. And then…it started as a simple thing. Can the puppet tap his finger against his head? It looked bad with rods, and Jodi had to enter the

Holy cow! Check out the trailer for Dante’s Inferno – The epic toy theater film of the classic journey through hell. All of it was filmed live, with no post-production manipulation. Gorgeous. I’ll be very excited to see it. Thanks to PuppetVision for pointing it out.

Summer?

I was off today and the weather was actually warm enough to sit outside and write. Amazing. I didn’t even need a coat, although I did have on a fleece. I spent some time working on revisions for Ginger Stuyvesant and the Case of the Haunted Nursery and think I have a clear plan of

Winged figures

Right. I’ve spent the last two days trying to find an appropriate image for Shimmer‘s Autumn 2006 cover. After looking at hundreds of pieces of art, I would like to know why it is so difficult to find a winged woman who is not a) nude b) carrying a sword c) nude AND carrying a

Sleepy

Indeed. The party went until sometime after three a.m. It’s weird. Culturally, when you throw a party in Iceland, you can expect that the guests will arrive an hour to an hour and a half after the stated start time. They’ll stay until three and then go downtown to finish partying. I can’t do this.

Eating apples

As you might imagine, the characters on the show spend a lot of time eating “sports candy.” The puppets can’t actually take a bite, so I wind up doing one of my favorite theater tricks. The apple already has bite in it but that part of the apple is held upstage so the audience can’t
